Background of the Study

In Nigeria, the involvement of security agencies, such as the Nigeria Police Force, the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps, and the military, is vital to curbing electoral violence, protecting voters, and preventing electoral fraud (Olakunle & Adamu, 2023). Lokoja LGA, Kogi State, has witnessed tense elections marked by political violence and security challenges, making the role of security forces particularly important (Bala & Usman, 2024). This study explores how security agencies contribute to the election monitoring process in Lokoja LGA, assessing their effectiveness in ensuring security, preventing violence, and promoting confidence in the electoral process.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Despite the presence of security agencies during elections, concerns about their effectiveness in election monitoring persist, particularly regarding their impartiality, professionalism, and the extent of their influence on election outcomes (Yakubu & Waziri, 2023). In Lokoja LGA, Kogi State, there have been reports of both positive and negative roles played by security agencies during elections, with some accusing them of bias or complicity in electoral malpractices (Gambo & Bature, 2024). This study aims to investigate the specific role of security agencies in election monitoring, focusing on the challenges they face and their impact on the integrity of the electoral process.
